Social change, progress and leaving behind of the old ways all seem to be outpacing moral values. With so much exposure to cyber world, television and media, it is essential to help children gain a firm footing in the society. We have identified 84 core values in terms of Self awareness, Empathy, Emotional Intelligence, Stress Management, Creative Thinking, Critical Thinking, Effective Communication, Decision Making, Problem solving and Interpersonal skills to be taught over a period of eight years from class 1 to class 8. The series gives the child a step by step introduction to life skills in relation to his/her immediate surroundings with basic aim of shaping the decision making abilities of children. The series also aims at developing the problem solving skills in the learner so that they have better interpersonal behaviour. The series 'Art of Living' has a mission of inculcating social skills, creativity, human values, empathy and better interpersonal behaviour in the young ones.
NOTE TO THE SCHOOL Schools across the country should adopt the value of the week approach, where the entire school community should give particular attention to a quality such as cooperation or kindness. Schools should celebrate various days, like 'Kindness Day' or 'Helping Others Day' etc. to make children realise the importance of various traits of life skills. Consideration of the virtue for that particular week should be reflected in the curriculum, in special assemblies, in classroom displays, and in school home newsletters. Sufficient time should be devoted to the activities mentioned in the book.
