Number rods are 10 in number with red and blue segments. The colour segments on the rod depicts the quantity. Purpose: This is the most concrete material to teach quantities. Unlike traditional method where children directly start with number symbols, Montessori method helps the child understand the concept before working with the symbols. The child learns the names of the quantities, learns gradation, and observational skills are developed, it also helps in future addition using small number rods. How to use: Show the child how to hold the rod, same as red long rods (under sensorial). Place it on the mat in horizontal manner randomly. Tell the child that these are number rods and today we are going to learn the names of quantities. Now ask the child to make a stair pattern out of the rods by placing the first rod toward the left side of the mat at the bottom. Ask the child to hold the rods and push the rods towards top. Now pick the number rod 1, 2 and 3 and place it at the right bottom of the mat starting with the number rod 1, 2 and 3. Now give three period name lesson. First give the child the fundamental lesson, isolate the number rod 1 at the center of the mat , trace it with two dominant finger of right hand and say this is how we trace and count 1 and point with index finger when saying 1. Place it back and isolate the number rod 2 and say this is how we trace and count 1, 2.2 . Place it back and isolate the number rod 3 and say this is how we trace and count 1,2,3.3 .Place it back and start with first period name lesson of Introduction. Isolate the number rod 1 and say THIS IS ONE and ask the child to repeat after you 3 times, place it back and isolate number rod 2 and continue the same procedure. Repeat the same for number rod 3 also. Then give the second period of Association place the number rods at the center of the mat in vertical manner starting with number rod 1 at the bottom. Now ask the child CAN YOU COUNT AND SHOW
